Winnipeg Free Press January 2 2025 New offer to buy Lemay Forest Conservancy aims to buy land from developer for more than $5MThere is not an approved development plan so there is no need to remove trees. Citizens should not have to fight to stop the damage to the Lemay Forest.

Pleased to see there is action and an effort still afoot to buy the forest. Russ Wyatt's suggestion to take money out of the tree budget and put it toward the Lemay Forest may be from good intentions but shows a lack of understanding. There will still be a loss to the urban canopy.

"This is precisely what is wrong with development in Winnipeg — political interference for political gain. You cannot complain about a housing shortage in the city, as Mayor Gillingham regularly does, and then allow these antics to continue. Telling landowners who have held property for over a century that they suddenly cannot develop it is unreasonable. This is not a communist country. The government has limits, and two elected officials have overstepped theirs."

Sector plans are something new the city is working on instead of secondary plans.
Their completion could be a few years off due to funding needed to complete them. There is an option for the developer to complete the plans, with city input as the city doesn't have money to do it themselves.

Memorial Woodland of Manitoba— an idea about burial of loved ones

At risk of being morbid, I am forwarding something that my spouse sent me as part of a discussion about advance planning . I thought that the idea of using one’s human cremains to nourish trees in a memorial woodland is quite interesting. (Spouse received the ad from the Oldies radio station.)
Just FYI as fellow tree fanciers.

Hi all.  Attached is a CBC article from August 12, 2025 about the tree canopy in Winnipeg - Winnipeg balances public trees removed, planted in 2024 — but long journey to grow canopy still ahead website: https://www.cbc.ca/news/ canada/manitoba/winnipeg-tree- canopy-numbers-1.7605731 .  The attached tree removal data and planting file was one sent to Christian Cassidy (TREES Winnipeg Executive Director) by the reporter before his interview so I am not sure how accurate that data is.

Christian sent this information to some of his contacts and ultimately it came to Trees Please Winnipeg and not I am forwarding to you for our information.

Subject: Birds need safe skies, Winnipeg needs to keep bird friendly bylaw

Dear friends,
Your urgent action is needed—deadline: noon, Wednesday, December 17.
Just one year after adopting the Bird?Friendly Window Design Standard from the Canadian Standards Association, City Council is now considering removing it at a Public Hearing on December 18—under pressure from the development industry.
Why this matters:
Windows in tall buildings are a leading cause of bird deaths, threatening biodiversity.
Winnipeg sits directly on a major migratory flyway, with tens of thousands of birds passing through every year.
As our city grows with more high?rises, we have a responsibility to prevent needless fatalities.
Industry groups argue the guidelines challenge housing projects. But Winnipeg’s new buildings will stand for decades. Without bird?friendly codes, declining bird populations will face continuing harm. The city must not reverse its plan.
Two quick actions you can take (and two are better than one):
Write a letter to your Mayor and Councillors. Use the points above or share your own experiences—personalized letters are especially powerful. (address list below) A few lines are helpful.
Register for the December 18 Public Hearing to submit written comments or speak.
Register for: Public Hearing here by noon Dec 17 https://legacy.winnipeg.ca/shared/mailforms/clerks/public-hearing/contact.asp
File number: DAZ 225/2025 – Amendment to Schedule AB Malls and Corridors zoning bylaw 200/2006 – Deleting the bird?friendly window requirements
Check off “Opposition” and “Submit comments in writing” (or present in person). Even a single line makes a difference.
Please share this message widely—every voice counts. Together, we can keep Winnipeg’s skies safe for birds and protect biodiversity for generations to come.
